History of Mallikarjun Kharge 

1. Who is Mallikarjun Kharge?

Mapanna Mallikarjun Kharge (born 21 July 1942) is an Indian politician. He is the current president of the Indian National Congress. He has been a Member of Parliament since 16th February, 2021.

Kharge was a Member of Parliament for Gulbarga, Karnataka between 2009 and 2019. He is a senior Karnataka politician and was the leader of the opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.

He was also the President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee during the 2008 Karnataka State Assembly Elections.

He won elections 10 consecutive times in the years 1972, 1978, 1983, 1985, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004, 2008, and 2009.

He was the leader of the congress party in Lok Sabha between 2014 and 2019.

He emphatically won the 2022 Indian National Congress presidential election.

2. Where was Mallikarjun Kharge born?

Mallikarjun Kharge was born on the 21st July, 1942 in the Varawatti, Bhalki Taluk, Bidar district, Karnataka. He was born into a Dalit caste family.

3. The early history of Mallikarjun Kharge

Mallikarjun Kharge obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Government College, Gulbarga and a Law degree from the Seth Shankarlal Lahoti Law College in Gulbarga.

Kharge started his career in politics when he was a student. He became a student union leader while in the Government College, Gulbarga.

He was later elected General Secretary of the students' body. He became the legal advisor to the MSK Mills Employees' Union in 1969. During this time he fought avidly for workers’ rights. Kharge joined the Indian National Congress and became President of the Gulbarga City Congress Committee in 1969.

He first competed in the Karnataka State Assembly elections in 1972 and won the Gurmitkal constituency.
