Brazil launches $204 million drive to restore Amazon rainforest

Brazil's BNDES launched the Arc of Restoration program at the United Nations COP28 climate summit in Dubai. The program aims to restore 60,000 square km of degraded woodland in the Amazon rainforest by 2030. It also plans to capture 1.65 billion tons of carbon from the atmosphere. BNDES President Aloizio Mercadante emphasized the importance of reforestation as a quick and cost-effective solution to the climate crisis. Earth systems scientist Carlos Nobre praised the initiative as an urgent and innovative response to the nearing point of no return for the Amazon.
