NEW DELHI - Mulayam Singh Yadav, the former defense minister of India, and a veteran Socialist leader of the Indians, died Monday at a hospital following a prolonged illness. Mulayam Singh Yadav had been hospitalized at a private hospital outside of Delhi for over two weeks and then announced his death by his son, Akhilesh Yadav, who is the political heir apparent of his Samajwadi Party, which holds power in the largest state in India, Uttar Pradesh. Known fondly as Netaji, or the Respected Leader, by supporters of Mulayam Singh Yadav, Yadav became the nation's most populous state chief minister a second time in 1993, the year after the demolition by Hindu Right-wing mobs demolished the 16th-century Babri Masjid, in 1993, one year after the demolition of the 16th-century Babri Masjid, in 1993. Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Jairam Ramesh said on Twitter that the 82-year-old veteran leader was a loyal Lohiaite, but had admirers across the political spectrum. Congress party General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said Mulayam Singh's unmatched contributions to Indian politics as Defence minister and Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh would always be remembered. Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has announced three days of mourning across the state in tribute to Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav, who passed away on Monday.

 

Following his death, several political leaders including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed their condolences.
